A Secret Place – Psalm 91:1, 2

Where is your secret place?

Children often have a secret place. It may be a place such as a tree house or a fort they made in the woods. It is a place where they can be alone with their best friend or just be by themselves. Adults also need a place and a time for quietness and meditation.

There is an even more important secret place. It is the place where you meet God and have fellowship with Him. “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty” (v. 1). It does not have to be a specific place, but that often helps.

What do you do in your secret place? It is a time of sharing secret thoughts of your heart? If you have burdens that no one else knows about, tell the Lord about them. He understands, and He cares about what happens to you.

The Psalmist wrote, “In the time of trouble he shall hide me in His pavilion: in the secret [place] of his tabernacle shall he hide me” (Psalm 27:5). Again, he wrote, “Thou shalt hide them in the secret [place] of thy presence” (Psalm 31:20). God strongly desires to have an intimate relationship with you. He is very eager to meet with you and communicate with you.

The result of meeting with God in a secret (private) place is that you will learn to confidently say, “He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust” (v. 2). When you meet with God in a secret place, you can be honest, open, and authentic. God will accept you as you are. He knows your fears and weaknesses. There is no reason to be afraid, because He desires these times of meeting with you, even more than you desire them.
