Worthy – Revelation 5:1–12

Who is worthy before God? Are you? Why?

There are three outstanding descriptions of the Lord Jesus Christ as He relates to the world. The first one was the “manger scene” when the shepherds came to worship Him soon after His birth. What a joy it must have been to be there!

The second description relates to Him hanging on the cross and dying for the sins of lost mankind. What great sorrow to have been present on that occasion.

The third description is yet to come. It will be the time when He is declared worthy to open the book which will declare all believers to be totally, eternally free. This will occur as the final chapter of the history of this world comes to a close in preparation for the beginning of the eternal ages.

The most important question of all times is “Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?” (v. 2). A moment of despair was the immediate response because “No man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. And I wept much, because no man was found worthy” (vv. 3, 4).

The despair will not last long because the witnesses will sing “a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth” (vv. 9, 10).

There is no possible way to imagine the joy that will be in the hearts of everyone who witnesses this scene. This book of Revelation reveals that the Lord Jesus Christ is the only One who is worthy. He is the only hope that anyone has of being accepted by a holy God. Do not have any fear, because “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain” (v.12).
