ABCs of Christmas (W) – Matthew 2:1–11

Are you worshiping the Lord? How?

The “W” of Christmas is Worship. Christmas without worship is not really Christmas at all. It is only a holiday.

Worship is much more than merely attending a service. It must come from a heart of love for the Lord. When Jesus was born there were two different kinds of people who said they wanted to worship Him. Consider their attitudes and learn an important lesson from them.

One group who wanted to worship Him was Wise Men. “Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem . . . behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, . . . we have seen his star in the east and are come to worship him” (vv. 1, 2). When they came to where He was “they rejoiced with exceeding great joy . . . and worshipped him” (vv. 10, 11).

A totally different person was King Herod. He commanded the Wise Men, “Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also” (v. 8). Obviously he intended to kill Him, instead of worshiping Him.

Which of these two choices have you chosen? After He began His ministry, Jesus said, “It is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve” (v. 10).

There are many different opinions about worship, pertaining to the method, the time, the place, etc. People tend to think that their traditions about worship are the most nearly correct. The Lord said, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).

Make sure that you worship the Lord with all your heart and enjoy this Christmas season more than ever before!
