ABCs of Christmas (I) – Luke 2:41–52

What in your life is increasing the most?

The “I” of Christmas is Increase. As you celebrate Christmas this year, remember this word. Ask yourself how God wants you to increase.

It is very touching to think about Jesus being born in Bethlehem and the shepherds being told about it by the angels. It would be interesting to know what they really felt as they went to see Him. However, all of these things were just the beginning of His life on the earth.

The Bible does not reveal much about Him for several years after His birth. When He was twelve, He went to the Temple with Mary and Joseph. He was separated from them when they left to go home. They came back and found Him in the Temple, discussing with the teachers. Everyone was amazed at His understanding. When He was rebuked by His mother, He said, “Wist [know] ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?” (Luke 2:49).

His parents did not understand what He was talking about, but He was obedient and returned home with them. “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man” (Luke 2:52).

In a similar manner, God’s plan for you, as a believer, is that you “be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:9, 10).

The more you increase your knowledge of God, the more you will grow in all of the ways mentioned in the above passage. As you increase your understanding about Him from His Word, you will also experience an increase of the fulfillment of His promises in your life. Both of these will increase the intimacy of your relationship with Him.
