ABCs of Christmas (F) – Matthew 16:24

Where are you willing to follow Jesus?

The “F” of Christmas is Follow. Dictionaries use words like cling, imitate, and pursue to define this word. Ask yourself how much you are willing to cling to, imitate, and pursue the Lord.

Matthew 2:1–11 describes how some Wise Men from the east followed a star because they believed it would lead them to the Lord. They said, “We have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him” (v. 2). They continued pursuing Him and “the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was” (v. 9). They had made a choice to follow (pursue) Jesus.

When the Wise Men found Jesus, “they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. . . . and fell down, and worshipped him” (vv. 10, 11). You also will experience great joy if you follow the Lord.

About thirty years later, after Jesus began His personal ministry, He said to His disciples (followers), “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me” (Matthew 16:24). The Lord calls many to follow Him. He wants every believer to cling to Him, imitate Him, and pursue Him.

The words below are not considered to be a Christmas carol, but if you can honestly sing them from your heart, you will have a very blessed Christmas.

I can hear my Savior calling,
I can hear my Savior calling,
I can hear my Savior calling,
”Take thy cross and follow, follow Me.”

Where He leads me I will follow,
Where He leads me I will follow,
Where He leads me I will follow—
I’ll go with Him, with Him all the way.
